形容词大战--批评与抱怨的形容词

  形容词是语言词汇中最有用的词类之一,它们可以用来表达我们的喜怒哀乐。在上一期中我们向大家介绍了不少用来形容优秀、成功人士的甜言蜜语,相信大家从中受益匪浅。现在,让我们再来看看贬义词,学会如何批评和抱怨。

  [Kim‘s Note]In the last issue we gave you a list of lovely adjectives to flatter and praise everyone and everything. In this issue we are giving you just the opposite. These are negative adjectives that will be just as useful!

  1、angry: filled with anger

  发怒的;愤怒的

  * There is nothing worse than having to face an angry wife.

  (没有什么比不得不面对一个愤怒的妻子更糟糕了。)

  * I was angry with him for keeping me waiting so long.

  (他让我等了这么久,我真的生他的气了。)

  2、awful: very bad; dreadful

  很坏的;糟透的

  * I‘m sorry to be so short-tempered but I have an awful headache.

  (我很抱歉脾气这么坏,但是我头疼得要命。)

  * The film was awful.

  (那部电影真是糟透了。)

  3、boring: not interesting in any way

  无趣的;无聊的

  * There is no way I am sitting through another boring meeting.

  (要我再次坐着开这种无聊的会议绝不可能。)

  * He is about the most boring person I‘ve ever met.

  (他可能是我见过的最无趣的人了。)

  4、careless: not taking care; inattentive

  粗心的;疏忽的

  * My son could get better grades if he wasn‘t so careless.

  (如果我儿子不是粗心的话,他可以得更高的分数。)

  * He‘s a very careless driver: he never thinks about what he’s doing.

  (他是一个粗心大意的驾驶员,从来也不考虑自己在做什么。)

  5、cunning: clever at deceiving people

  狡猾的;狡诈的;善于欺骗的

  * I don‘t trust your new secretary, she’s just too cunning.

  (我不信任你的新秘书,她太狡猾了。)

  * He‘s a cunning old fox.

  (他是诡计多端的老狐狸。)

  6、depressing: make one feel depressed

  令人忧愁的;令人沮丧的

  * I hated that movie. It was too depressing.

  (我讨厌那部电影,太令人沮丧了。)

  * It‘s a totally depressing thought.

  (这完全是个令人沮丧的主意。)

  7、gloomy: sad; depressed

  阴沉的;阴暗的;忧愁的;沮丧的

  * I don‘t know why you stay in such a gloomy room all day when the weather is so beautiful.

  (我不明白天气这么好为什么你还呆在一个阴沉沉的房间里。)

  * What are you so gloomy about? Cheer up!

  (你为什么情绪这么低落?振作起来吧!)

  8、hopeless: showing or giving no hope; useless;

  没有希望的;令人绝望的; 没用的

  * I just have to give up on you. You‘re just hopeless.

  (我不得不放弃你了,你真是令人绝望。)

  * It‘s hopeless trying to convince her.

  (要说服她是没有希望的。)

  9、impatient: not patient; unable to wait for something

  不耐烦的;无耐性的

  * My teacher is too impatient. She yells at me every time I make a mistake.

  (我的老师太没耐心了。每次我犯了错她都要对我大喊大叫。)

  * Don‘t be impatient! The bus will be here soon.

  (别那么不耐烦!公共汽车马上就来了。)

  10、inconsiderate: not considerate; thoughtless; not thinking of other people

  不体贴人的;考虑不周的;不替别人着想的

  * I don‘t know why I married such an inconsiderate man.

  (我不明白为什么我嫁给了这么一个不体贴的男人。)

  * He‘s often inconsiderate to his family.

  (他常常不体谅他的家人)

  11、indifferent: not interested in; not caring about or noticing

  不感兴趣的;不关心的;冷淡的

  * I don‘t have any feelings toward him. I’m completely indifferent.

  (我对他没有任何感觉,我完全不感兴趣。)

  * How can you be indifferent to the sufferings of starving people?

  (你怎能对饥民的疾苦无动于衷呢?)

  12、jealous: want to get what someone else has; envious

  嫉羡的;嫉妒的

  * You‘d better not talk to her. Her husband is an extremely jealous man.

  (你最好不要和她说话。她丈夫是个醋罐子。)

  * He is jealous of our success.

  (他嫉妒我们的成功。)

  13、miserable: poor in quality or quantity; too small

  低劣的;贫乏的;少得可怜的

  * How can I keep a family on such a miserable wage?

  (我怎么能靠这么可怜的工资养家?)

  * My father was a miserable man. He was always complaining.

  (我父亲是个可怜的人,他总是抱怨。)

  14、nasty: unpleasant; disgusting

  令人不愉快的;令人讨厌的

  * Who‘s that nasty old woman?

  (那个令人讨厌的老婆子是谁?)

  * This room has such a nasty smell.

  (这个房间有一种恶心的气味。)

  15、ridiculous: silly; absurd

  荒谬的;可笑的

  * What a ridiculous idea!

  (多么荒谬的念头!)

  * You look completely ridiculous in that outfit.

  (你穿着那套服装看上去真是滑稽。)

  16、selfish: thinking first of one‘s own needs without concern for others

  自私的;不顾他人的

  * He‘s too selfish to think of lending me his car.

  (他很自私,不想把汽车借给我。)

  * You‘re the most selfish person I ever met.

  (你是我见过的最自私的人。)

  17、stubborn: determined not to give way; strong-willed; obstinate

  倔强的;固执的;顽固的

  * I knew you‘d be too stubborn to listen!

  (我就知道你这个固执的家伙是不会听的。)

  * You are as stubborn as a donkey!

  (你倔得像一头驴。)

  18、unfortunate: not fortunate; unlucky

  不幸的;倒霉的

  * I was unfortunate enough to lose my keys.

  (我把钥匙丢了,真倒霉。)

  * I‘m sorry to hear such unfortunate news.

  (听到这么不幸的消息,我感到很难过。)

  在开始之前,我们先来学习一个很有用、很时髦的词:

  Kiss-ass: to flatter someone to gain advantage and approval.

  阿谀奉承;拍马屁;溜须拍马

  *That guy will kiss-ass his way to the top.

  (那个家伙将靠拍马屁往上爬。)

  *He is a little kiss-ass bastard who‘ll do anything to get ahead.

  (他那个小混蛋是个马屁精,只要能往上爬,他啥事都干。)

  1、Cool: great; excellent; unusual

  棒极了;泰然自若的;沉着的;轻松的。

  世界很多新闻媒介都用“cool”来形容我们的朱总理。

  [疯狂短评]

  Cool is the first word on this list because people have become so lazy and careless about speaking that they use“cool”to describe everything and everyone. One word replacing so many adjectives is an example of the poverty of language. In any case, using the word“cool”will make you sound……cool! (modern, with-it, hip, up-to-date, stylish, contemporary, intelligent, etc.) Get the picture? That‘s cool.

  *What a cool guy!

  (多酷的家伙啊!)

  *This chick is so cool-no matter what happens.

  (不管发生什么事,这姑娘都十分老练沉着。)

  *She is totally cool and easy-going.

  (她十分轻松自在。)

  2、Accommodating: eager to help or please; obliging

  乐于助人的;亲切的。

  *The tour guide was very accommodating when we asked to see a Beijing Hutong.

  (当我们要求游览北京胡同时,那个导游欣然答应。)

  3、Active: engaged in action or activity

  活跃的;活泼的

  *He is not as active as he was.

  (他不像以往那样活跃。)

  4、Admirable: praiseworthy; excellent

  令人钦佩的;极好的

  *She‘s an admirable administrator.

  (她是一个优秀的管理人员。)

  5、Adorable: very attractive; charming

  迷人的;讨人喜欢的;可爱的

  *What an adorable child!

  (多可爱的孩子。)

  6、Amazing: overwhelming; surprising; astonishing

  使人十分惊奇的;令人惊讶的

  *My mother is an amazing woman.

  (我妈妈是一个了不起的女人。)

  7、Amusing: entertaining; attention-getting

  有趣的

  *He tried to be amusing, but I didn‘t respond.

  (他试图逗乐,可我一点都没反应。)

  8、Artistic: showing skill in how something is done

  有美感的;有艺术才能的

  *My brother is very artistic.

  (我弟弟很有艺术天分。)

  9、Attractive: providing pleasure or delight, especially in appearance

  有魅力的;吸引人的

  *Her dark eyes are very attractive.

  (她的黑眼睛很迷人。)

  10、Beautiful: excellent in appear ance; good-looking; attractive

  美丽的;漂亮的;完美的;出色的;很棒的

  *She is beautiful and has beautiful personality.

  (她长得漂亮,人也很好。)

  11、Big-hearted: generous; kind

  胸怀宽大的;亲切的

  *Our boss is very big-hearted.

  (我们老板胸怀宽广。)

  12、Brave: showing courage; unafraid of danger

  勇敢的;无畏的

  *Try to be a brave man!(做一个勇敢的人。)

  13、Bright: quick to learn; intelligent; smart

  伶俐的;聪明的;机灵的

  *He has a lot of bright ideas.

  (他有很多好主意。)

  14、Brilliant: having or showing great intelligence or talent

  优秀的;才华横溢的

  *I have taught a lot of brilliant students in my life.

  (我一生教过很多出色的学生。)

  15、Capable: having power and ability; competent

  有能力的;能干的;有才华的

  *She is my most capable student/employee.

  (她是我最出色的学生/员工。)

  16、Calm: free from worry; composed; collected

  沉着的;冷静的

  *He remained calm throughout the crisis.

  (在整个危机过程中,他一直保持冷静。)

  17、Careful

  小心的;谨慎的;仔细的

  *He is a very careful typist.

  (他是一个细心的打字员。)

  18、Caring: showing concern for others; compassionate

  关心别人的;有同情心的

  *Kim is an extremely caring teacher.

  (KIM是一个极其关心学生的好老师。)

  19、Charming: delightful; pleasing

  有魅力的;迷人的;快乐的

  *She is a charming young lady.

  (她是一个迷人的年轻女士。)
